La Chaume, today a neighbourhood of Les Sables d'Olonne, shelters its history in the little streets that wander across this old village of fishermen and market gardeners. La Chaume is actually the cradle of the city, since it was founded centuries before Les Sables. Originally, it was a rock on an island (Île Vertime) that was linked with the mainland in the Middle Ages following deposits of clayey mud that filled the Olonne bay. La Chaume remains largely separated from the seaside town by the port approach channel.
